YouTube has unveiled a new feature called Jewels, designed to provide creators with a new way to monetize their content and viewers with a new avenue for supporting their favorite creators. This innovative feature lets viewers send virtual gifts during eligible vertical live streams (more on that below), helping creators build stronger connections with their fans.
Here’s everything you need to know about Jewels and how you can integrate this exciting feature into your YouTube strategy.
What Are Jewels and What Are the Requirements?
Jewels are a digital currency used to purchase virtual gifts that viewers can send during vertical live streams. These gifts appear as eye-catching overlays on the stream, drawing attention to your live while enhancing engagement.
For Viewers: Jewels lets fans show appreciation in a visually appealing way, making them feel more connected to their favorite creators. Viewers must be U.S.-based to purchase Jewels and send gifts (directly through the YouTube mobile app only) and view/purchase from the YouTube Mobile app.
For Creators: Jewels convert into Rubies, with each Ruby valued at $0.01. The more Jewels you receive, the more Rubies you earn, boosting your revenue in the long-run. To use YouTube's Jewels feature, creators must be U.S.-based, part of the YouTube Partner Program, and stream in the vertical format on YouTube.
Creators can stream vertically through third-party streaming software such as Streamlabs Desktop but may not see gifts directly. To track gifts, monitor your live stream via the YouTube mobile app or check for system messages in the Live Control Room (LCR) chat feed.
