Have you ever watched a stream where there were a bunch of cute little characters walking around at the bottom of the screen? If so, the streamer could have been using the Stream Avatars app. Stream Avatars is the perfect way to add a bit of fun to your streams and to keep your chatters engaged. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Stream Avatars app and show you how to set it up with Streamlabs Desktop.
What Is Stream Avatars?
Stream Avatars is an app that automatically assigns an avatar to anyone chatting on your stream. As the streamer, you can command the avatars to battle, dance, and more. Viewers can battle each other for coins to customize their avatars. Some streamers even offer to “pin” a viewer’s avatar somewhere on the screen as a channel point reward (check out our article on channel point ideas for more inspiration).
There are loads of different avatars to choose from, such as Pokemon, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, and more. The Stream Avatars app is available for a one-time purchase of $14.99 on the Steam Store. You can use it with the live streaming service of your choice, whether that be Twitch, YouTube Live, Trovo, Facebook, etc.
How to Install Stream Avatars
First, you’ll need to purchase Stream Avatars for $14.99 and download it from the Steam Store. Click here to go to the Stream Avatars website.
Once you’ve installed the app, you need to connect it to your streaming platform. Do this by clicking on “Login Details” from the left column. Then choose your streaming platform, and you’ll be prompted to log in from there.
You'll want to click on the “Steam Workshop” button on the left side of the screen to choose which avatars you’d like to have. We’re using Animal Crossing avatars today. After finding an avatar pack to your liking, try clicking the “Connect” button in the top left corner to ensure everything is connected properly. It should take you to a screen that looks like this:
You can configure other settings, such as the size of your avatars and whether or not you want an avatar to be applied to chatters only or viewers. We recommend “chatters only” for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, having an avatar just for chatters encourages viewers to stay active. If the viewer stops chatting, their avatar will disappear after a while. Another reason to keep settings to chatters only is because some people like to lurk anonymously on streams. Having an avatar with their username above it could cause them to click off your video.
After you’ve played around with the settings, you just need to set up Stream Avatars in Streamlabs.
How to Set Up Stream Avatars With Streamlabs
First, click the plus sign to add a new source, then choose “Game Capture.”
Choose “Capture Specific Window,” then choose “Stream Avatars.”
Make sure “Allow Transparency” is checked. If you leave it unchecked, your screen will look like this:
As long as you have “Allow Transparency” selected and “Stream Avatars” at the top of your source list, you should be able to resize the avatars to your desired screen size. We put ours at the bottom of the screen, so they aren’t blocking our game.
That’s it! Now you can use Stream Avatars and all if has to offer on your streams. Here are a few chat commands to try to liven things up.
!battleroyale
!mass dance
!mass bomb
!basketball
!duel
As the streamer, you’re in control of certain commands, like !mass dance and !battleroyale. However, viewers have their own set of commands, such as !duel, where they can compete to win coins to customize their avatars. Accessories like hats, glasses, and more can be purchased with coins, as well as bombs for players to drop on each other.
