Today marks the return of the Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet Live Streaming Report, charting key streaming and viewing statistics from Q3 2019 to Q3 2024.
You can read the full report here.
Using data provided by Stream Hatchet, the report examines streaming activity, viewing trends, concurrent viewership and more across several major streaming platforms — Twitch, YouTube Gaming, Kick, Steam, and Facebook Gaming — to create a robust snapshot of the current state of live streaming.
“Streaming continues to be a powerful force in digital entertainment, and this report is instrumental in helping us to understand where viewers and streamers are congregating and how that might coincide with changes on the platforms,” said Ashray Urs, Head of Streamlabs. “We hope this can be a real resource to creators who are serious about growing their audiences, but it also gives the Streamlabs team critical insight to provide these creators with even better tools.”
It’s been a transformative year for streaming, as relative newcomers like Kick challenge industry-leading platforms and new channels populate an increasingly crowded landscape. Research from Goldman Sachs shows the creator economy is growing tremendously, but only 4% of creators are making content creation their full-time job. This fierce competition has given rise to the popularity of multistreaming, which is becoming non-negotiable for creators hoping to multiply their fanbase. As creators seek to put down roots on new platforms, the Q3 2024 Live Streaming Report offers insights into which platforms are growing, which ones are stagnating, and where audiences are the most engaged.
With data encompassing 2019–2024, the report reveals how the selected streaming platforms fared during the surge of digital activity caused by the pandemic, how they weathered the post-pandemic come down, and what challenges they face in the current streaming market.
The biggest takeaways from the report include:
- Kick is on the rise, with viewership soaring 200% since last year.
- A few wobbles aside, Twitch is standing strong in the face of market variations, retaining its spot as the go-to destination for digital broadcasters.
- YouTube Gaming is making a comeback, experiencing a significant resurgence in hours streamed, unique channels, and average concurrent viewership.
- Facebook Gaming falters in maintaining consistent viewer growth in a competitive streaming market.
“In bringing back this report with Streamlabs, we were excited to look deeply at how the streaming landscape has changed over the past five years. The creator economy is dynamic and ever-growing, and the live segment is a huge and increasingly influential part of it,” said Eduard Montserrat, CEO at Stream Hatchet. “Streaming is so much bigger than just gaming, now, and we look forward to tracking how platforms continue to adapt to the diversification of content.”
Overall, the data suggests that streaming platforms must keep innovating if they want to meet the evolving interests of the streaming community. Retaining audiences and keeping channels afloat requires adapting to users’ preferences and staking their space as a content destination.
