Self-care is certainly a buzz term these days. Whether it’s your aunt on social media or your favorite influencer, many folks have a lot to say (or sell) on the subject. In reality, self-care isn’t about going for a walk, having a bubble bath, or having a glass of wine while binging Netflix.
According to Psychology Today, real self-care is about getting more in tune with yourself and setting boundaries: “Self-care is not a to-do list item. It is a necessary long-term survival skill.”
When it comes to game streamers, here’s what that can look like:
Set a Streaming Schedule That Works for You
Don’t feel pressured to stream at times that don’t work for you. Create a schedule around when it’s fun for you, and that energy will transfer. If you have to cancel a stream, don’t apologize. You’re allowed to have a day off without needing to say why. This is your channel, and you should feel in control of it. Listen to your viewers and followers, and let them know when they can expect new content. But ultimately, do what works best for you and your viewers. If you’re happy and excited to be streaming, that will come across on camera and keep people coming back for more.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
It can be easy to feel overwhelmed or discouraged when starting out in streaming. After all, there are so many successful streamers out there, and it can seem like they have it all figured out. However, it’s important to remember that everyone started somewhere. The successful streamers you see today likely went through the same struggles and challenges you’re facing. So don’t be discouraged — keep pushing forward, and you’ll find your own success.
Additionally, don’t feel obligated to play games you don’t enjoy just because it’s what everyone else is doing. It’s much more important to focus on playing games that you love. Doing so will make you a stronger and happier streamer in the long run.
Forgive Yourself
We all have moments where we feel like we’re not good enough. We compare ourselves to others and think we should be meeting our goals by now. Maybe we miss a day of streaming or let a troll get to us in-game. It’s OK to feel like you’re not reaching your potential. Everyone has setbacks, and it’s essential to be kind to yourself during these times. Judging yourself too harshly will only make you feel worse, and it’s important to remember that you’re only human. It’s OK. Practice kindness to yourself. Your feelings are valid, and you’re allowed to have them, but don’t judge yourself too harshly for being human.
Believe in Yourself
You are capable of great things. Yes, you. It’s time to start believing in yourself. Too often, we focus on our negative traits and accomplishments. This creates a snowball effect that can be hard to break out of. So, shift your focus. Instead of dwelling on your failures, take some time to appreciate your successes-no matter how small they may seem. And then set your sights on what you want to achieve next. Just remember, you don’t have to do it alone. Talk with loved ones and friends who will support and uplift you every step of the way. They’ll help you stay positive and motivated as you work towards making your dreams a reality. So believe in yourself-you’re capable of greatness.
It’s OK Not To Be OK
Sometimes, life gets overwhelming, and we need to step back. That’s OK. It’s more than OK. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, and we need to treat it accordingly.
If you’re feeling down, you can do a few things to help yourself. First, take a break if you need it. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s OK to step away from work or responsibilities for a bit. Sometimes, all we need is a little break to clear our heads. Second, practice meditation. Meditation can help to calm and focus. There is no shame in seeking out professional help or therapy if you need it.
In the U.S., 211.org or calling 211 can assist you with mental health and many other resources.
Don’t wait until your breaking point to practice self-care. Make sure you’re checking in with yourself regularly. You deserve it.
