Embark on your VTubing journey with VTube Studio, a tool that enables creators to animate and stream using customizable virtual avatars through real-time motion and facial expression tracking. This guide is here to smoothly navigate you through setting up your avatar, whether you choose one from the studio's gallery or import your unique creation. We'll also cover how to make your character come to life with camera tracking and, most excitingly, how you can effortlessly integrate your avatar with Streamlabs Desktop for streaming.
Before getting started, check out the below graphic to understand where each icon takes you from the homepage. If your navigation window no longer displays, double click the canvas to make it reappear.
Choose or Import Avatar
The first step to getting started in VTube Studio is getting your 2D model ready. Here’s how you do it:
Choosing an Avatar
Select from VTube Studio’s array of pre-made avatars by clicking the person icon (very first icon) to reveal the list of options. Be sure to choose one that aligns with your style and personality (or at least the character lore you created for your avatar).
Importing Your Own Model
If you have your own model on hand, whether you created it or purchased a model, you can import it into VTube Studio instead.
- Find the VTube Studio folder in your Steam files. Navigate to VTube Studio Data > Common > Streaming Assets > Live 2D Models.
- Drag and drop your custom model file into this folder.
- Restart VTube Studio to load your new model.
Once your model is imported or selected, use your trackpad or mouse to adjust the size and position of your avatar. Using the two fingers placed on your trackpad, you can zoom in and out by swiping up and down, respectively. With a mouse, you can use the wheel to zoom in and out. On either device, you can right or left-click and drag to move on your screen.
Connect Camera
Setting up your camera for face tracking is the next step to bringing your 2D model to life. You can use your built-in webcam, an external webcam, or even a mobile device.
Using a Computer Webcam
- From the settings window of VTube Studio, select the camera icon.
- Under Webcam Tracking, select Choose Camera. Select a webcam connected to your computer.
- Configure the resolution and frame rate (minimum 15 FPS, 30 FPS recommended).
- Adjust tracking quality based on your device’s capabilities (level 1 being the lowest quality and level 5 being the highest).
- Next, select your tracking type. This can be just face, hands, or both.
- Once you select your settings, click Camera ON. Your avatar should now replicate your movements.
Using a Mobile Device as a Camera
- Ensure VTube Studio is open on both your computer and mobile device.
- In the desktop app, access Connection Settings.
- Reveal your IP and port details by selecting Show List and enabling Start Server.
- On your mobile device, click Find Server to locate your desktop server.
- Once identified, select Use this IP on your mobile device.
- Enable Connect to PC on your mobile device.
- In the desktop app, under the model settings, select Send Model to Phone to transfer your model. Accept the transfer on your mobile device.
Note: VTube Studio enables precise customization of your avatar's movements, from basic gestures to detailed expressions. While our guide introduces you to the basic setup, the software offers advanced options for fine-tuning animations. Customize your avatar's movements to match your style, ensuring a truly authentic virtual representation.
