As a blogger, you probably love writing and having people read your words. While there are many people who enjoy reading, there are some who struggle with reading long blog posts or large blocks of text. The solution? Infographics. With the help of infographics, you can ensure that everything you’ve got to say will be seen and heard (well, read) by more people.
What are Infographics?
Infographics are visual representations that are designed to make information, data, analytics, etc. more accessible and understandable. From a blogger’s perspective, infographics should contain the most important points from your blog post and be packaged in an attractive, easy to read format.
Why Should I Use Infographics in My Blog Posts?
There are so many reasons why including infographics in your blog posts is a good idea, including:
Accessibility - Infographics break down complicated concepts into smaller, easier-to-understand chunks, making your blog more accessible to a wider audience.
Engagement - Infographics can help you capture a reader’s attention and hold it so much easier than a text-only blog post.
Shareability - Infographics make it easy for others to share your content with friends or on their own social media sites. This can lead to more backlinks and higher traffic for your blog.
SEO Improvement - Infographics will show up under image search engine rankings and can help draw readers to your site.
Branding - Using consistent fonts, colors, and graphics with your infographics can help flush out your brand and increase your brand recognition. High quality infographics can also increase your credibility and establish your blog as an authoritative source.
Repurposability - You can take infographics from your posts and repurpose them as content on sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.
How to Create Good Infographics
Creating infographics is fun and easy if you know what to do and have the right tools. Today we’ll show you how to create an infographic with Canva, a free design software that has a ton of pre-made infographics templates.
Step 1: Nail Your Branding
Before you start gathering data for your first infographic, make sure you have your branding nailed down. Hopefully your blog (and other social media) has clear branding in place, meaning your fonts, color scheme, logo, imagery, etc. have already been decided. If not, take a look at our posts on how to create a personal brand and how to improve your branding. An infographic with excellent branding will be instantly recognizable as yours, regardless if readers come across it somewhere other than your blog.
Step 2: Gather Data
It’s time to decide what content you will include in your infographic. If you’ve already written your blog post, give it another readthrough and keep an eye out for data or information that can be turned into a visual aid. Don’t have a lot of data? You can also summarize your blog post, illustrate lists, and write how-to steps.
Step 3: Choose a Design
Now you’re ready for the fun part: browsing infographics templates on Canva. As you get more comfortable creating infographics, you can easily make your own from scratch. Until then, Canva has hundreds of pre-made templates for you to use. When browsing through templates, pay more attention to the format, style, and layout rather than the colors and fonts (since you’ll be changing those to match your branding).
Step 4: Fill Out Your Template
Once you’ve chosen an infographic template, all you need to do is replace the text with your own data, switch the colors and font to your branding, and change the icons as needed. Try to remain true to the template’s original design—don’t clutter it up with too much text. Keep your captions short and sweet and stick to two to three fonts and colors.
Step 5: Post to Your Blog (And Beyond)
After your infographic has been filled out and stylized with your personal branding, you can download it from Canva and upload it to your blog post. As we mentioned earlier, infographics can easily be repurposed for social media sites, especially Instagram and Pinterest. If you’re a Canva Pro or Teams member, you can resize your infographic to optimize it for your social media site of choice. Be sure to link back to your blog wherever possible to maximize traffic.
Infographics are a great way to add visual interest to your blog and make your posts more accessible. Not only can infographics help with SEO and engagement, they’re highly shareable and can easily be repurposed to use on sites like Instagram and Pinterest. With free design tools like Canva, anyone can create beautiful infographics quickly and easily. We hope you’re inspired to include infographics in your future blog posts!
