Requirements for Live Streaming on Instagram
Before live streaming, ensure your setup meets the recommended settings for broadcasting. Talk Studio from the Streamlabs team can easily accommodate all of the following settings.
Video
- 9x16 aspect ratio (recommended but not required to live stream)
- 720p @ 30 fps (note: 30 fps is recommended, but Live Producer can also support 60 fps if desired. When using 60 fps, the Instagram Live Producer preview will display 30 fps).
- Resolution 720x1280
- Video bitrate range: 2,250–6,000 Kbps
Setup
- Recording and Streaming Software such as Talk Studio (check out our guide for using this browser-based streaming software before getting started)
- Instagram stream key (more information on retrieving below)
How to Live Stream on Instagram (from Web Browser)
Instagram stream keys are now available for any Instagram professional account. To access your stream keys and go live to Instagram from Talk Studio, visit Instagram from any desktop device and follow the steps below:
- Ensure your Instagram account is set to a professional account. At this time, personal accounts cannot access stream keys. To create a professional account or update an existing personal account, follow Instagram’s guide here.
- From your Instagram home page, click Create, then choose Live Video.
- Create a title for your stream and set your stream to Public.
- Click Next, and you will see a screen with your Stream URL and Stream key. Note: Do not close this popup.
- From your Talk Studio dashboard, press Go Live and click Add Destination > Add Custom RTMP.
- Name your Custom RTMP connection (for example, “Instagram Stream July 15”) and insert the RTMP URL along with the Stream Key. (if applicable).
- Once you are ready to go live, click Go Live in Talk Studio and start your stream.
- Return to your Instagram browser window and choose Go Live in the popup referenced in Step 4.
How to Stream to Instagram from Your Browser (In portrait mode)
With Portrait mode streaming in Talk Studio, you can select a mobile-friendly, vertical layout and go live on platforms like Instagram or Facebook in a 9:16 ratio (1080 x 1920p).
1. Go to Talk Studio.
2. Add yourself and all the guests on the main screen, then click on the Toggle Portrait Mode icon you will see next to the layouts.
3. That’s it! You can broadcast in vertical view and record content with Talk Studio, and post it later to Instagram or TikTok for extra buzz across your social media pages.
